Primitive Sound System and DJ DontCloseMaxwells! - D.C.'s Tavern - June 6 - 9PM to Closing
Hello Y'all,
One brief word on the closing of Maxwell's and then we can all move on, or at least I will. We started to go to Maxwell's sometime in 1982 or 1983. I don't remember the order of the shows but I remember the Bongos were the big draw to head down to Hoboken. Our Dad had been listening to FMU since it first went on the air so it wasn't that far of a stretch to think we would be at Maxwell's and in the City for shows. I am not sure where other teenagers hung-out at the time… seriously what did they do? Where did they go? But, we knew this was better than staying home and getting drunk at a friends house. This was something to du. I remember Ira and Georgia's wonderful DJ sets and backing John Klages before catching that fly ball and striking out on their own. The desire to go to Maxwell's wasn't just the bands it was a place we felt comfortable and the characters contained inside were hilarious, creepy, cool, beautiful, ugly, friendly, obnoxious, etc, etc and we felt like we should never leave. They were all like minded folks that luckily found the best possible place to be. We never really were looking to be part of a scene so we always stayed on the edges never becoming to friendly or close to many people. But, you will find that after you frequent a place for over thirty years people start to recognize you.
At one point we actually had gone to Maxwell's over fifteen nights in a row. We had started a landscaping business which meant we were up early and finished early. Long naps, some pizza and then we were off to Hoboken. If the nap was short we tried to hit Pier Platters before driving around to the other side of town and parking down by the river because even then you were lucky if you got a spot really close to the club. Our prime years were from the early 80's through the 90's so you can only imagine the bands we saw and we saw them all (except Mission of Burma). I look to my buddy Dave Gilmour (who I first took there in 1985 to see the minutemen) and my brother to clarify the lineups. I know, for the most part, what bands we saw and sometimes things stick out to help me remember the other bands on the bill. If I am real lucky, I can possibly recall the time of year. To me it has been one, big, long, endless bill… until now.
As many bands that we saw, there are a hundred times that in stories we could tell. When my hair was long Peter Buck once bought me a beer and said, "Hey, Eddie Vedder, this one's on me." Simply so he could get a laugh. Of course I said thanks, and then drank it down in one big gulp. I played my first show there with a band I was in called Love Onion and played one of the last with Hippopotamus, a band I was in for thirteen years. I DJ'd Latin, Soul and Funk there every Tuesday for six years as well as many of the Christmas parties during that time. I did some newspaper and magazine ads for the club, the first of which was for a Soul Food night. I showed my art on its walls on several occasions and began doing pieces for "Weird NJ" because of it. My son and his friend shared their third birthday in the back room. As the party was winding down Lou Barlow began loading his equipment in. At one point he sat on the stage and marveled at the kids running around. I walked over, stood next to him for a minute and he finally spoke, "I can't believe I am going to be playing a show here and I am following a kids party." There are a million more, and probably a million I can't remember. It will be missed but sometimes you just got to know when to say good-bye.
I think that was just one word, right?
Thanks to everyone who ever made Maxwell's great.
Oh yeah, for years my brother and my friend Ronny always said they saw me in this Mudhoney video. I had never seen the video until a few years back and at the 1:46 mark, don't blink, it is quick, there I is. The footage was shot at Maxwell's. What's even funnier is sometimes when you search the video, I am the thumbnail.

Chuck and I will engage in our usual battle royale. Air guitars, drums, bass and any other spastic simulation we can muster will mostly be for our own entertainment. So come on by, have a cold one, two or three and do something stupid for your own amusement. Larry The Hunter will be minding the bar while you mind your own goddamn business! So be kind and tip the man, especially since there are only seconds between reloads.
I spent the this past Sunday at the always amazing Black Gold Records in Brooklyn. I picked up three very long time want list records as well as some other "must haves." I also got a care package from the good folks over at Slovenly Records and Black Gladiator Records. If there are labels putting out more consistently great Punk and Garage I have yet to find them. I am not sure what I am more impressed with; their "ear" to find such mind-numbingly great bands or the bands themselves. Who the fuck cares, just buy their records and be happy… or smash things.
Speaking of smashing things, and then I gotta go because this is the longest post ever, I picked up a copy of The Traits - "Nobody Loves The Hulk" after being tipped off by my friend John O'Toole. Not only is this one of the best Garage records ever it comes in a super sturdy hardboard cover that is silk screened on both sides. The lyrics on the back and an action shot of the Hulk about to ruin everyone's day. Contrary to the subject matter, I Love the Hulk! "HULK, SMASH HIT… RECORD!"
Come by and let your ears be entertained while you numb your body and lower your IQ.
See you there.

Primitive Sound System at D.C.'s Tavern Thurs. August 2nd from 9PM to Closing
Hello Y'all,
So we arrived back on the shores of the Jersey Turnpike Sunday afternoon. The car and its passengers were equally tired and just as happy to be home. This trip was based around the search for fun and records. Sadly that means I may have had more fun than the nine year old but I don't think he even noticed. Our first stop was Philadelphia. One thing we noticed immediately about Philly was that it is old. Not scary old but movie set old. It was especially funny to see a plaque bolted to a building describing a historical location or event but upon closer inspection you may notice a Flyers or Eagles banner in the window. "Do you know who slept there?!" "Um, yeah… me." Time rolls on no matter what we do or no matter who we are. Sadly this also described the records stuffed in the bins around the city, time worn. Unlike the buildings most of the records had seen better days and others needed to be just tossed or recycled. You would think Philly was an island and there is a finite number of records on it. Each record had that rode hard and put away wet look. There were a few bright moments digging and definitely some good stores but I guess I expected so much more from Philly.
Our next stop was Hershey Park which was only about fun and not records. See, I can have fun without records being involved. We dipped ourselves in chocolate, road on some of the best toys a kid could ever have and sweat our asses off. I did get to ride the Coal Cracker which was a childhood favorite, Hank seemed to really AHHHHHHHH!!!!… like it too. …off to Pittsburgh… I mean Kidsburgh.
I had been told by everyone that NOTHING could prepare you for what lay behind the doors of Jerry's Records. I have been through Pittsburgh and I believe I had been there a few times as a child. Every year there is a very big 45 & 78 record show in Pittsburgh - I have never been to it. As you look to the top of the steps while walking up to Jerry's you can see there are records everywhere. When I say records everywhere I mean every-where… on shelves, behind shelves, in boxes, in bins, in the walkways and even in the bathroom. I wandered around for a few minutes and then I saw the fourteen foot high shelves containing box after box after box of 7-inches. I spent almost seven hours flipping through as many 45s as I could and didn't come close to putting a dent in even one wall. I am not saying I'd like to live in Pittsburgh but I could crash at Jerry's for a month or two. By-the-way did I mention that Jerry's son Willie has an entire store of 78's? He does and it is equally impressive. On our way out of town we stopped at a small shop above a cafe called Mind Cure. The owner of Mind Cure was young but from his impressive selection you can tell he has taste far beyond his years.
Our next stop, York PA, is just outside Dallastown PA where the one and only Bazooka Joe resides with his lovely wife and hyper-active dog Olive. It's not like we needed extra coaxing to stop and say hi but a dozen crabs didn't hurt. Joe had told us about the incredible Tom's Music Trade so we hit it before making our way to their home. No one in the York area should ever complain about not being able to find records because Tom's is one of the best shops I have ever seen and apparently he is stocking the bins daily.
We found fun and I found a whole lot of records. Come by D.C.'s Tavern tonight and hear a good number of what I found plus, Garage Rock, R&B, Soul / Funk, Punk and some Metal even.
See you there!

EATIN' & DRINKIN'
I recently decided to pull all my Food and Drink based 45s from their various genres and locations. Over the past year I have been making mixes for a friend who specializes in wine (http://www.anthonygiglio.com). Of course this "forced" me to buy a whole bunch of wine, beer and spirits based records. As if I needed a reason to buy more records. Another friend recently opened a BBQ place in Jersey City (http://tinyurl.com/2dztzau). That got me foraging deep into the boxes for food songs. I did give myself rules for what qualifies as a food song since so many are taken out of context. I had to decide that Popcorn songs don't count, though I will be making an all Popcorn mix. Even "Cracker Jack" by Mickey and His Mice doesn't count because as you know, "It aint nothing but THE POPCORN with some sweet jive on it." "Aw shucks." I will blindly include all Chicken songs which means I get to include "The Hen" by Louis Chachere. This is a song, like TAD's "Jack Pepsi," that should be played once a day to keep you sane. But, it is still hard to legitimize the "Funky Chicken" songs and similarly titled masterpieces since they are getting down on the floor rather than satisfying your craving and inducing a food coma. Similarly, and even though it is a personal favorite, I had to pass up the inclusion of "Moaning For Molasses," since I am just guessing Mr. Williams ain't paying tribute to the sweet syrup made from cooking cane juice. I have not included any Modern records in this first batch. My cut of is the 70's for now and does not include much of the Rock records except instrumentals from the 50's and 60's. Many of the New Funk and Soul bands have deliciously titled tunes and I will get to them soon enough. I definitely need to go through the boxes again but the count is somewhere around 250 spanning the 40's to the 70's and covering many genres. During one of my almost daily chats with the amazing DJ Prestige he suggested I put together a guest mix for his Flea Market Funk site (http://fleamarketfunk.com) so look for that soon. I think that's enough gravy and sauce to cover everyone. So if you sling hash or booze expect a link from me soon. Then expect seconds, and thirds...

Vex Ruffin & The lo-fi Jerkheads 45 on Black Gladiator Records
Recently I was lucky enough to do some artwork for a friend's new record label. Do artwork for a vinyl 45... HELL YEAH! The new label is Black Gladiator Records (http://www.myspace.com/blackgladiatorkills) and its head warrior is DJ Bazooka Joe a.ka. Joe Diddley of "Thing With Two Heads" fame. The band is amazing one man whirlwind known as Vex Ruffin and The lo-fi Jerkheads (http://www.myspace.com/vexruffin). As if that wasn't enough, Black Gladiator is also a subsidiary of one of the best labels of all time - Slovenly Records. The 45 can be ordered directly HERE
