This First Thursday (February 5th from 9PM to Closing) we are inspired by the two feelings that are equally as destructive as they are fulfilling - Love & Hate. Chuck Daly and I will be joined by the man known as Collector Scum - Justin Frohwirth. I have seen some amazing record collections over the years but nothing compares to the focus and quality found in every box in his studio. What is even more impressive is the fact that the collection is not overwhelming in number. That is not to say that it is easily gone through or even comprehensible. Every box is filled with favorite Punk “hits,” but what is really impressive are the ones you have never heard of or even knew existed. Do not miss this not. As always Brian Daly will be serving you drinks until you love at least one person and keep drinking until you can't stand the sight of them. As always all Beerdos welcome!

Continental Co-Ets - I Don't Love You No More (IGL # 105) 1966
Moptop Mike Markesich's amazing TeenBeat Mayhem USA 60s garage discography book lists just over 30 bands of the era that had all girl members, and this understated rebuke to the boys is one of the best of them. It can almost be seen as an answer song to any of hundreds -- possibly thousands -- of other songs listed in the book.

Fear - I Love Livin in the City (Criminal no #) 1978
A love song of a different sort. Although it's really a song of hate. So perfect for the night's theme.

Freestone - Bummer Bitch (Akhashic AK-2001) 1978
There may be a few contenders for the title, but I'd call this the quintessential misogynistic hate anthem of the Killed By Death "genre", certainly helped by being comped on an early volume of the series, and later being covered by artists like Jay Reatard. According to lore, they really were more of a prog band, which can be heard to some degree on "Church", the flipside of this record. "Bummer Bitch" was recorded as a throwaway joke, and the world is a better place for it.

Nerves - Hanging on the Telephone (self-released # N4501) 1976
Perhaps the best powerpop song of all time, and they did it better than Blondie who later made it famous.

Sister Ray - Hate - from the Coming To Terms EP (Sad no #) 1985
One of a number of records I'll be playing which share this simple title, but this is most criminally under-rated of all of them. It certainly didn't help that the band's later material on labels like Sub Pop and Forced Exposure is still littering dollar bins everywhere. But the band's mid-to-late 80s singles on their own Sad label, plus their 1st LP "Random Violence" on the very uneven Dutch imprint Resonance, are all great. Could a band from 1980s Ohio named after a Velvet Underground song really not be good?

Triumphs - Surfside Date (IFF # 151) 1964
This is perhaps the odd man out on Back From the Grave #2, given its early date and obvious surf influences, although Ralph Nielsen & The Chancellors was even 2 years earlier and on a label called Surf Records. I won't try to explain why a band from Wisconsin was doing a surfy record, but how can you top a song with the genius couplet "After the usual razz-a-ma-tazz / I'll take you home and all of that jazz"? They got their point across loud and clear fifty years ago, when no one was allowed to say "fuck" on record.

It seems like forever since the last time I DJ'd at D.C.'s.  Since the last time I have embarked on a a project: "The Gap Sealer."

I love buying records.  I love looking through records.  And sometimes I love looking through piles and piles of unsorted records for hours without stopping for something to eat, drink or even a bathroom break.  If you walk away someone may find that one record you were looking for.  It is an obsession and could probably be classified as a disease.  Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I have never made or carried around a real want list.  If it was a record I knew about and really wanted I would simply remember it.  This "system," left several gaps in my collection.  But, since I did buy what I like and only kept what I loved; the collection did have an over-all focus.  Like I have said before, every record collection should be a portrait or biography of the owner; I hope my collection is just that.  Despite that, the gaps exist, and sometimes I would fall deep inside them and wonder why they existed.  Some of the gaps were created at a time when I focused on Funk, Soul, R&B and Jazz purchases.  At that point I needed to free up shelf and 45 box space as well as have cash to buy what I wanted.  Most of the Hip Hop 12-inches went as well as a lot of Punk 45s.  My rationalization for selling the 7-inches was that I had LPs by those bands and I could still enjoy their music.  Same for the Hip-Hop but unfortunately I did not have as many LPs to cover all the music I needed to clear out.  To this day my Hip Hop collection is definitely not what it should be.  I have recently re-purchsed some of them but I don't think I will ever be able to get back or afford what I had.

Ironically the Punk records have not increased in value like other genres.  My brother and I were recently joking that it is more Punk to just get the music that inspires you then own it on an OG 45 or LP.  It isn't very Punk to be buying these up now but maybe this is how old Punk and Hardcore kids go through a mid-life crisis.  Regardless of the reasons, the inspiration came when I had the opportunity to go through the sale boxes of my buddy Justin.  Justin is know to the world as - CollectorScum (http://www.collectorscum.com).  It would appear that Justin has more records to sell, than he does in his personal collection.  So his philosophy is, buy collections and rare records for cheap, sell them quickly so that you have deep pockets to buy the rarest of the rare records.  His collection is fucking beautiful.  I have seen hundreds of collections in person and possibly thousands, if you count books and online, and I must say, none of them can compare to the focus, quality and organization of his.  It is inspirational.  It will also make you feel as if you have never looked through a single bin of records in your life… ever.  You would be lucky to recognize, know or own even an eighth of what he has.

Fully inspired and ready to go, I sat down and wrote my first real want list.  Turns out it was surprisingly easy.  First off, I needed to complete my Buzzcocks and The Fall 7-inches which I sold because, as I rationalized, I had them on LP.  It pained me at the time to do it and it kills me to even think about it now.  Buzzcocks is now complete and I need one more Fall record.  I am not a completist, I usually have a year that I cut bands off and that was true for both bands.  This cut-off goes for all bands.  It is no different from saying I love Star Wars, but in my world the last three don't even count, they don't exist.  It is few and far between that bands can rally years after they were no longer relevant.  One such band was Mission of Burma but that is a whole other story.  Next came, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers and The Ruts.  I considered these the low hanging fruit so I wasn't surprised to be able to knock them off easily.  There were also items on the list that someone either stole the insert or the insert had gotten lost over the years.  I still have these LPs and 45s so the priority isn't high, but i am tired of saying, "It used to have the insert."  One of those is my Minor Threat "Out Of Step" with the black back cover.  I bought it for $3 in a garage sale when I was in High School.  The insert was a letter sized sheet, later pressings have a larger one.  If you took mine, fuck you!  This goes for my Adolescents LP as well.  If you took that one as well, I will have to kick your ass but gladly I can say that is not replaced. 

Other records on the list are ones that I never came across a copy or heard it and loved it, but never pursued it for one reason or another.  I was explaining to someone recently that before computers, the internet, eBay or Discogs you were pretty much at the mercy of what was available in the bins of your local stores or any store you were lucky enough to go to.  If you didn't get it locally you could contact the label and see if you could get a copy but sometimes you were just plain SOL.   This would include the e.p.s by The Worst and Urban Waste.  I love these records and saw the bands but never bought the records.  In some cases the records were already long gone by the time I found out they even had a record available.  Years passed, tastes change, and I was searching for different records and sounds.  I recently went through my entire collection, carefully trimming the fat.  I called up my friend Jeff who has a shop in Brooklyn (Black Gold Records - http://blackgoldbrooklyn.com) and brought them to him.  With the money he gave me I immediately bought up more records on the list.  I have been trimming and pruning and have some more to bring him.  This project and concept has added a new dimension to collecting and since it is one I never actively pursued it has made it exciting again.

Come by Thursday night and I will be spinning a lot of these old - new finds.  

The past few months I have manned the play-station all by my lonesome, but this month I will be re-joined with DJ SummerLivesOn! - aka Chuck Daly so stop by, drink some booze, tip Larry and GET HIGH!

Hello Y'all,
One brief word on the closing of Maxwell's and then we can all move on, or at least I will.  We started to go to Maxwell's sometime in 1982 or 1983.  I don't remember the order of the shows but I remember the Bongos were the big draw to head down to Hoboken.  Our Dad had been listening to FMU since it first went on the air so it wasn't that far of a stretch to think we would be at Maxwell's and in the City for shows.  I am not sure where other teenagers hung-out at the time… seriously what did they do?  Where did they go? But, we knew this was better than staying home and getting drunk at a friends house.  This was something to du.  I remember Ira and Georgia's wonderful DJ sets and backing John Klages before catching that fly ball and striking out on their own.  The desire to go to Maxwell's wasn't just the bands it was a place we felt comfortable and the characters contained inside were hilarious, creepy, cool, beautiful, ugly, friendly, obnoxious, etc, etc and we felt like we should never leave.  They were all like minded folks that luckily found the best possible place to be.  We never really were looking to be part of a scene so we always stayed on the edges never becoming to friendly or close to many people.  But, you will find that after you frequent a place for over thirty years people start to recognize you.

At one point we actually had gone to Maxwell's over fifteen nights in a row.  We had started a landscaping business which meant we were up early and finished early.  Long naps, some pizza and then we were off to Hoboken.  If the nap was short we tried to hit Pier Platters before driving around to the other side of town and parking down by the river because even then you were lucky if you got a spot really close to the club.  Our prime years were from the early 80's through the 90's so you can only imagine the bands we saw and we saw them all (except Mission of Burma).  I look to my buddy Dave Gilmour (who I first took there in 1985 to see the minutemen) and my brother to clarify the lineups.  I know, for the most part, what bands we saw and sometimes things stick out to help me remember the other bands on the bill.  If I am real lucky, I can possibly recall the time of year.  To me it has been one, big, long, endless bill… until now.

As many bands that we saw, there are a hundred times that in stories we could tell.  When my hair was long Peter Buck once bought me a beer and said, "Hey, Eddie Vedder, this one's on me."  Simply so he could get a laugh.  Of course I said thanks, and then drank it down in one big gulp.  I played my first show there with a band I was in called Love Onion and played one of the last with Hippopotamus, a band I was in for thirteen years.  I DJ'd Latin, Soul and Funk there every Tuesday for six years as well as many of the Christmas parties during that time.  I did some newspaper and magazine ads for the club, the first of which was for a Soul Food night.  I showed my art on its walls on several occasions and began doing pieces for "Weird NJ" because of it.  My son and his friend shared their third birthday in the back room.  As the party was winding down Lou Barlow began loading his equipment in.  At one point he sat on the stage and marveled at the kids running around.  I walked over, stood next to him for a minute and he finally spoke, "I can't believe I am going to be playing a show here and I am following a kids party."  There are a million more, and probably a million I can't remember.  It will be missed but sometimes you just got to know when to say good-bye.

I think that was just one word, right?

Chuck and I will engage in our usual battle royale.  Air guitars, drums, bass and any other spastic simulation we can muster will mostly be for our own entertainment.  So come on by, have a cold one, two or three and do something stupid for your own amusement.  Larry The Hunter will be minding the bar while you mind your own goddamn business!  So be kind and tip the man, especially since there are only seconds between reloads.

I spent the this past Sunday at the always amazing Black Gold Records in Brooklyn.  I picked up three very long time want list records as well as some other "must haves."  I also got a care package from the good folks over at Slovenly Records and Black Gladiator Records.  If there are labels putting out more consistently great Punk and Garage I have yet to find them.  I am not sure what I am more impressed with; their "ear" to find such mind-numbingly great bands or the bands themselves.  Who the fuck cares, just buy their records and be happy… or smash things.

Speaking of smashing things, and then I gotta go because this is the longest post ever, I picked up a copy of The Traits - "Nobody Loves The Hulk" after being tipped off by my friend John O'Toole.  Not only is this one of the best Garage records ever it comes in a super sturdy hardboard cover that is silk screened on both sides.  The lyrics on the back and an action shot of the Hulk about to ruin everyone's day.  Contrary to the subject matter, I Love the Hulk!  "HULK, SMASH HIT… RECORD!"

Hello Y'all,
I don't think I have been this busy in a very long time.  I didn't get to do a gig drawing which bums me out but I did have time to hit some stores on Record Store Day.  Many, many years ago I read that there were more songs recorded when Husker Du did the sessions for the "Statues" 7-inch.  "Statues" wasn't the breakneck bulldozer that was soon to come on Land Speed Record.  Ironically it leaned more towards what later became their own version of Hardcore, a more Pop or well crafted song played at double-timed speeds.  I picked up "Statues" about a year after it came out and it promptly made appearances on almost every mixed tape I ever made. At one point I read that the remaining songs were to come out possibly on the B-side of a 12-inch but that never happened.  Recently I read that the two songs, "Writer's Cramp," and "Let's Go Die" would finally be released by Numero Group as a 10" on Record Store Day 2013.  Despite all of my dislikes for Record Store Day there was no way I was going to miss out on this release.  I contacted a few local stores and both Iris Records in Jersey City and Tunes in Hoboken said they ordered the single.  I queued up at Tunes at around 8:30AM and made it inside where I was able to get a copy.  It certainly did not disappoint.  Later that day I got to spin a set at Iris and pick up a few more things including a couple of records I have been looking for, for a long while.  If Wretched Store Day is truly about your local record shop than Iris and Tunes are definitely two of my favorites.

As seems to be the routine each of these vinyl holidays, stores and patrons alike wish that the releases could be ordered and then pressed in numbers so that the actual customers that frequent the store can purchase the releases from their favorite record store.  This way they wouldn't have to beat the sharks and assholes that just buy as much as they can, from as many stores as they can get to and then dump the records on eBay.  I assume these are the same assholes that call records, vinyls.    

I have way too many record stores that are or have been my "favorite" to list them all.  I have been able to find amazing records on every vacation I have been on or touring around with my band.  Anyone who ever thought vinyl was dead never really collected records or appreciated how much better analog is to digital.  If you are anywhere near Hudson County make sure you stop at both Iris and Tunes.  If you enjoy both White Man(n)as equally then make sure you also hit The Record King while in Hackensack.  Proof of the enduring nature of the format a friend is opening a shop upstate New York in a few weeks - Clockwork Records 6 Spring St, Hastings on Hudson, NY 10706.

Larry the Hunter will keep pouring you drinks until the music stops.  It's like the most dizzying game of musical chairs ever.  It's been a few months since Chuck has been at the tables so this should be a good one.

Hello Y'all,
My friend and long time bandmate once had a business card that read, Mark Maloof - Chug Metal Guitarist - "If Your Band Needs Balls!"  It made me laugh out loud when I first saw it.  If I remember correctly our friend Liz made him the card.  It was definitely meant to be funny or even ironic but truth be told Mark could have made more bands than I'd like to think sound a million times better.  Regardless of genre the one thing all bands need is balls.  Balls to do exactly what they want to do ad not give a shit what others think.  And of course, I prefer bands that could possibly cause an earthquake at the right volume.  Aggression is not the same as balls.  Many performers are aggressive but they don't necessarily have balls.  Most performance art sucks for this reason.

The Melvins have balls.  Flipper have balls.  Bo Diddley has balls.  Fela has balls.  Miles Davis has balls.  Mavis Staples has balls.  Marva Whitney has balls.  You get the point.  I can also go into a long list of bands that don't have balls but think they have balls.  But I try never to write any negative reviews and that would certainly be just that.  Though that would be a great series of reviews… Attack Attack! - "Balless."  Next….

For the longest time I thought Rush were balless.  I don't get their music at all.  Beyond all the problems that I think are obvious the sound of their records are all treble no bass.  This from a band led by a bass player and a drummer who can't possibly buy enough drums to make himself sound good.  Talk about overcompensating.  It wasn't that I didn't listen.  I tried, especially after I began playing music.  Our band got lumped into the Math Rock genre and most people's Prog point of reference was Yes or Rush.  I dislike both of those bands equally.  About six months ago Chuck Daly - aka DJ WIthANewNameEveryTimeHeSpins - pulled the first Rush record out of his bag.  Not to be rude but I had to pull the, technically this my DJ gig night and with that said… there will be ABSOLUTELY NO RUSH.  I don't have many rules to listening to music and I live to hear something new.  He convinced me i'd be pleasantly surprised and holy shit, he was not wrong.  For the past six months it has become the most played record in my studio.  For some reason or another some bands lose their balls.  Oh well.

From what I know Chuck is a bit under the weather and he was supposed to bring a surprise guest.  That may not be happening but I will have my big box o' band that gots balls.

Hello Y'all,
It really seems like it has been a year since we last spun at D.C.'s.  Super Storm Sandy has since officially been deemed the worst storm to hit the North East ever recorded.  We lost power for a four days but luckily did not have any major damage.  One of my favorite record stores, Iris Records in Jersey City, was not so fortunate.  The owner not only lost a storage facility of stock he lost his personal collection.  I truly cannot imagine what that would be like.  I have seen Steve since and I have to say he seems to have come to grips with his loss.  Don't expect me to have such a quick recovery if I ever lose my collection.  The last time I saw him the guys behind the Open Crates sessions moved their event to his store.  I left just before 11PM and It was amazing to see so many people still shopping for records and listening to favorite tracks.  I have know idea how long they went but I know it felt great to support the store and bring home some amazing records.  Shop at Iris it's good for your soul.

Recently the world of vinyl experienced another storm of sorts, Record Store Day - Black Friday.  As always there were a few records I wanted but very few local stores that I frequent were going to carry them or are even able to purchase enough product to participate.  Pretty ironic right?  Some stores that have been around for as many as 40 years are unable to be a part of Record Store Day .  I called about eight places and then contacted Chip, the owner of Tunes in Hoboken, he was able to get all the releases I was interested in.  Considering the toll Sandy took on Hoboken it felt great to support Tunes just a week or so after that miserable storm flooded Hoboken.  The main releases I was interested in was yet another series of Captain Beefheart 45's put out by the amazing Sundazed Records.  They did not disappoint.

This past year filled my collection with some records I had been looking for, for many, many years and others I had never heard of before adding them to the insanely long list known as, "One Of My Favorite Records Of All-time."  My number one want list record for over twenty years was a flexi disc released in the 70's called "Herbie Hancock Plays The Rhodes Electric Piano."  The record was nearly impossible to find because it is a flexi and even when I did come across one it was folded, creased or warped.  I found one from a dealer in Europe and when the record came it was perfect.  One of the main reasons I was so obsessed was the inclusion of the theme to "Spook Who Sat By The Door."  Just weeks later I also found a copy of the ad that you would have needed to respond to if you wanted one.  Pretty fucking cool.

One of the many records I picked up this year that I was not completely familiar with was by the NYC Punk band The Nothing.  I had seen the record on hundreds of want lists and I know I heard it from time to time but I never knew how rare it was.  I was crawling through a mess of a store in Upstate New York and The Nothing 7-inch was the first record I put on my pile.  I knew it was rare but I was thinking like $50 - $60 kind-of-rare.  I paid a dollar for the record and emailed my friend Justin.  Little did i know we were talking about $1500 - $2100 kind-of-rare.  WHOPEE!

I am not the best person to take on vacation.  The first thing I think of everywhere we go is, "I have never been here, where is the record store."  A used book store will do just as well.  There are always records buried somewhere in a used bookstore or junk shop. Hank loves to go places and do things when we are on vacation.  Going to the ocean is great but he likes to go to parks and art & science museums just as much.  So this year we split our time between museums and activities for Hank and record stores for Dad… thanks Honey!  We made our way from Philly to Pittsburgh and back and none of it disappointed.    

One of the biggest highlights this year was meeting a true icon of the Latin Music scene.  Through some perfectly timed events I got to spin Boogaloo records on This Is The Modern World with Trouble while Harvey Averne told stories about being a producer, performer and label exec through one of the coolest careers in music.  Harvey is one of the nicest people I have ever met and I only wish we had about a hundred more hours to shoot the shit and spin some records.  Maybe one day soon we can do it again… hello, Trouble….

In all the years I have been DJing I have never looked forward to spinning with someone more than I do each month with Chuck Daly.  Chuck is like 30 or 40 years younger than me but has freakish musical knowledge long beyond his short time sucking air.  Each week I learn something new about Chuck which is amazing considering how many months we have been doing this together.  If he told me his was once a member of Spinal Tap I wouldn't be surprised.  GET HIGH! & ROCK!!!

There are probably 5 million other things I wanted to write about but instead I am going to include an almost complete list of this years acquisitions.  Yup, believe it or not, the below list is not complete.

Along with these 2012 purchases I am filling the boxes with a stack of Norton Records releases and some Christmas records.

Hello Y'all,

None of this has anything to do with the records I will be playing this week but I ended up on the website of Baron von Raschke and it reminded me of this…

I spent a whole lot of time lifting weights when I was younger.  I would workout about six days a week which also included jogging six miles a day and doing 360 sit-ups in six minutes.  This schedule included holidays and any other day for that matter.  I was obsessed, imagine that.  I first starting working out when I was 13, this was not long after I lost a lot of weight.  I was well over 200lbs by the age of 12 so it was either lose weight or become a statistic.   And hell, no one wants to be known as "Fat Pat The Water Rat." for their entire life.  By fourteen I was 142lbs and ready to change everything about the way I looked.  Four years later I was 248lbs and winning weightlifting competitions.  I worked out at a place called The Whippany Athletic Club.  The gym attracted professional and semi-pro football players, competitive power-lifters, bodybuilders, and professional wrestlers amongst the usual mix of societies finest from lawyers, doctors, teachers, mechanics, bouncers… a lot of bouncers, bikers, high school and college athletes local business owners and folks I just never learned anything about.  Occasionally someone famous would stop in to train, usually it was someone from the Professional Wrestling world because Ken Patera trained there.  Kenny was an interesting character.  He was easily one of the strongest people I have ever met but he was also the least friendly.  I met Kenny after I earned a key to the gym for winning a bunch of competitions.  It was the gym's policy that if you won a competition you didn't have to pay for the next month's rent.  If you won many competitions eventually the owner, Jimmy, would trust you with a key.

I didn't expect Jimmy to open the gym early since he was a bouncer and worked late most nights so having a key was perfect for me.  The first morning I opened early I was surprised to see someone already there… it was Kenny.  I didn't startle him and nor did he acknowledge my presence.  I am pretty sure Kenny was not afraid of anything.  I got changed and warmed up.  I started lifting when I heard a voice say, "Spot me."  Those were the only words he had spoken all morning.  I looked over and he was doing seated behind the neck shoulder presses with what appeared to be something like 400lbs, he was already doing reps by the time I made my way over to him.  "Spot me," meant if he pushed to failure it was my job to return the weight back to the racks and keep it from injuring him.  I wanted to say, FUCK YOU, ARE YOU INSANE?!  But instead, I walked over as if I was capable of this task and not concerned in the slightest.  He did what seemed like 20 reps and with the bar bending in that same gentle motion as a wave or the rhythmic motion of a bird in flight, he racked the bar with little to no effort.  Kenny Patera was a former Olympic lifter turned professional wrestler.  Vasily Alexeev, arguably the most famous Olympic weightlifter of all-time, once said that Kenny was stronger than him and it was a shame he failed his lifts in 1972.

I am not exactly sure of the year (somewhere between 1984 and 1986) but for one reason or another many wrestlers began training at the gym on a regular basis.  These included, Blackjack Mulligan, his son Barry, Tito Santana, and Baron Von Raschke (there were others I just can't remember them right now).  Blackjack teased Tito endlessly and Tito declared Professional Wrestling a sport and not entertainment as Blackjack loved to say.  Barry was tall so it made him look skinnier than he was and I felt bad that Blackjack would constantly say, "Why can't you be more like Pat."  It wasn't until many years later that I learned that "Barry" was actually Barry Windham and had only just started his career in the ring.  All of this was amazing but none of them were even close to being as interesting as The Baron.  The Baron was old looking.  He was bald, his skin sagged and he always looked tired but it all seemed to be part of his act.  Oddly enough he was probably the  same age then as I am now.   The Baron was hilarious if you could understand what the hell he was saying and even when you had no idea what he was saying you would still laugh.  Then, with the timing of a seasoned comedian, he would wait for the perfect moment and launch into his signature move, "THE CLAW!" and turn the laughs from your's to his.  The Baron spoke with a German accent but it wasn't even real, he created the character in the mid to late 60's and some where along the line forgot that it was just an act.

The Baron showed up to the gym every day that Blackjack and the rest of them did.  But he never did anything.  He would sit and talk to people or just mumble to himself while walking around.  You could tell he just liked being in the gym.  One day Jimmy said, OK Baron, if you are going to show up here every day you need to do something.  He grabbed the isometric push-up blocks and told him to do ten push-ups.  After his requisite comedy sketch he dropped to the floor like a fallen tree and began to do the push-ups.  He commented on each one until he collapsed.  It was all very funny and obvious to us that The Baron was in great shape and 10 push-ups were certainly not a problem.  Well, the next day Blackjack and the gang showed up but this time The Baron was not with them.  About an hour later we heard what sounded like someone rolling a boulder up the steps.  Jimmy took a look and then told us to do the same.  He was trying to keep himself from laughing but he could not contain his huge smile.  It was The Baron and he was crawling up the steps like a wounded soldier trying to save his own life.  He made it to the top, crawled to the middle of the floor, and rolled over as if relieved he survived his great ordeal.  In his odd German accent he spoke…"Yimmy…Yimmy da Baron, da Baron no good.  Hurt.  No more do push-ups."  Of course everyone burst out laughing and when the moment was right he threw up his mighty claw and went after Jimmy.

And as the Baron once so eloquently said, "Dat is all da people need to know."

This month I'll be bringing the Budget Record Breakdown amongst the usual Punk, Heavy 70's, Rock, 50's & 60's Instrumentals and a taste of Soul & Funk.  Nothing makes me happier when flipping through LP's than stumbling upon some Budget Label or as I like to call them "Dollar Records."   Most are filled with cover versions of hit songs but they all contain one or two originals to flesh out the sides.  Many of these bands have included musicians that went on to fame but again most are sadly unknown.  The Budget Label genre isn't limited to the obscure.  Sometimes labels (in many cases the parent company to the budget one) would remove one track or replace it with an older hit and release it for a cut rate.  There were no other formats (CDs, etc…) so if you were going to make the most from a single recording this was your best bet to extend its life.  They are cheap and I love 'em.

Hello Y'all,

This month Chuck and I pogo our way to the pit and drag everyone down with us. I am going to keep mostly to the 70's and early Hardcore… because I am that old. The desire to do an all Punk night came after buying the new LP by OFF! (offofficial.com) - which if you haven't heard it you should if you have heard it you know why I have become possessed with the desire to only spin records from the left side of my studio. That's where I keep the Punk ROCK!!! I have only pulled a 100% Punk set once before and it is easily my favorite night of music.

BUT!
Then I was upstate and came across a copy of The Nothing 45 "Uniformz" for a dollar. A DOLLAR! As far as I knew this was one of the rarer Punk 7-inches and was worth somewhere in the $500 range. I knew this from working behind the counter of Finyl Vinyl where I saw the record listed on countless want-lists. These lists are always presented by the exact same type of person in every genre of music. They would hand you the list and then almost immediately say, "Do you know any of these?" OK you smug bastard, NO, I don't know them all. Actually no one probably does. OK, and… then they'd usually give you a few seconds and say…"Do you have any of them?" Of course we do! How many copies of each would you like? Fuck off asshole! So there I was in a junk shop upstate and the first record I spot is The Nothing. I almost immediately slide it under another record and continue to look around for about an hour. I actually unearthed a bunch of nice finds. This was easily one of the most disorganized shops I had ever been in. Basements in abandoned buildings are more organized. I talked with the guy running the shop the entire time I was looking. By-the-way, people aren't more friendly the further you get from the City they just talk more. I began going through my finds checking condition and deciding what I was going to keep. I really do try not to be a record shark because almost all of them are assholes so I listened to each record with "Hoss" giving him the opportunity to recognize it or know it wasn't a dollar record. He didn't. I drove back to our friend's place and did a little research. Much to my surprise it turned out that the record was far more rare than I knew. The past few copies that have sold on eBay have gone for around $2000. Yes three zeros, not two. I then shot an email to my buddy behind the rare Punk site CollectorScum.com he not only confirmed the value but he was recently involved in a reissue of the 45.

I posted the fact that I found a copy on a few sites including facebook and much to my surprise a friend's band used to play with The Nothing and unfortunately had an amp stolen by them. YEAH! PUNK ROCK!!!

I didn't find a lot of info about the band so I then reached out to Howie Pyro. As always I didn't just get a story… I got a great one.

"Long story to type… Singer came outta nowhere, had an English accent but everyone was sure he was from New Jersey or Cleveland or something. I played with the guitar player (Angel Electra) for a minute and they're both in this video with me and The Misfits from "78 or "79 (earliest footage of them). I'm on vocals with Trixie Sly (Singer of The Nothing) ruining it by singing in the wrong timing. Danzig on guitar, Jerry Only on bass, etc...always a story…"

Hello Y'all,
Ground Hog Day is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the fact that it, out of all the holidays on the calendar, truly celebrates nothing.  There are no scientific findings around Phil's abilities. He pokes his head out of his hole and then sticks it back in.  No matter what he does someone interprets it as either a short or long Winter and … Yeah… holiday over.  Considering there seems to be  an endless supply of Phils it is just as creepy as all the other holidays based on mythical characters.  This year we are going to celebrate in style, "Six More Weeks of Soul!"  OK, so it is just five hours, but it sounds better with six weeks.  It's been a while since we have done a Soul night and I am really looking forward to it.  As always be kind and rewind, tip your bartenders and above all if you drink don't drive and if you drive keep off the sidewalks.  See ya there!

I am bringing WAY too many records.  Some classics and some that hopefully you may not know.

Here are some Soulful 45's casting a shadow on the tables…

BT And TB - "Queen of The Ghetto"  (Philadelphia International Records cat. ZS8 3571)
I have said it all too often but I love instrumental music.  I will usually take an instrumental over a vocal track any day.  I am sad that bands don't put an instrumental track on their records or on the b-side as often as they used to.  It was really common.  Here Bobby Taylor and Thom Bell take performer credits as well as arranger and producer credits.  Is there nothing these guys can't do.  When I first picked this 7-inch up I noticed the date, 1975 and the title, "I Can't Quit Your Love" and thought this is not only the wrong date but that title says bad late 70's Soul ballad.  Nope, not even close, it was an instrumental with a clavinet running through it as the lead or voice.  The song wasn't bad and for some reason I immediately thought how incredible it would have been if  Yaphet Kotto would have played Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files.  No offense to James Garner but it would have been pretty cool.  Ever the optimist I flipped it over and was very pleasantly surprised.  This was far closer to what I was looking for and there was still that Action movie soundtrack vibe I love.    I wonder if this was ever used in a movie?  It should be.  It opens up with really big sound, lots of horns and a wah guitar jumps out accenting the beat with some really nicely recorded drums.  The song pulls back on the big sound and trims it back to the essentials, bass, drums, keys, and guitar.  The horns slowly build back up before repeating the theme which is what really gives it that sound track feel.  This is a movie I want to see.  Eddie Harris was right, "Theme In Search of a Movie" indeed.  I am not sure who the "Queen of The Ghetto" is or what her story was but I am glad i got to know her for at least  three minutes.

The Ice Man's Band - "Come Together" and "Ain't Understanding Mellow" b/w "It's Down To That" and "People Make The World Go Round (That's What Makes The World Go Round)"   (Mercury cat. MEPL-22 (Promotional Copy / Not For Sale))   
One of the first "records" I ever owned was actually a cassette.  When I say, "I owned" it is because my Dad has a great record collection and we spent most of our time going through it and studying them.  My son doesn't seem to share this same curiosity as he told me recently, "Why do you tell me about the people playing the music.  I either like it or I don't, all that other stuff is boring."  He definitely has a point.  If you aren't interested in the details it just gets in the way of listening.  I guess he will never read these emails because here I get to talk too much about the records I love.  Where was I?  Oh yeah, The Stylistics.  The Best of The Stylistics to be exact and yes I still have the cassette.  The Stylistics made a very deep impression on me, one that remains to this day.  The song that immediately stood out for me was  "People Make The World Go Round…"  I knew right from the opening that this wasn't your typical ballad.  The open chimes and bass line are peaceful but have an obvious sadness.  The opening lyrics let you know right away that there may be something wrong in your neighborhood, "Trashmen didn't get my trash today."  This is no "Betcha By Golly Wow."  The next line is even more poignant, "Buses on strike want a raise in fare; So they can help pollute the air."  Holy shit!  The thing that should keep cars off the road, hopefully gives us all more "breathing room" in our cities, helps us to get to work on time, and saves us money is also a major contributor to pollution.  Yikes, WE ARE ALL DOOMED!  They then turn their sights on Wall Street.  Wall Street blames the long hairs for them loosing money and then they turn around put up their feet and smoke a fat cigar without a care in the world.  Tomorrow they'll find someone else to blame while they get richer and richer.  Sound familiar?  Nothing changes.  But people do change and that is what the song is about.  Go underground get out of the line of fire and make changes to the way things are done and how people act.  People make the world go round and are responsible for changing the world.  Quite a task to say the least.  Over the years I have collected several versions of this song.  I have rarely found a bad version.  When I dropped the needle on the "Introducing The Ice Man's Band" LP I got chills.  These guys captured the very essence of what makes the song so great.  The environment it creates is one of being uncomfortably close, not like a hug but more like the feeling you get in a crowded elevator.  Everyone avoiding touching one another and for the most part silent.

Mickey and the Soul Generation - "Iron Leg"  (Maxwell cat. L-803)
How the hell have I never written about this record before?!  This was one of the first "Funk Instrumentals" I ever owned by an artist I had never heard of.  "Iron Leg" is basically a Jazz / Funk Instrumental and heavy as hell.  The opening of "Iron leg" sounds like a fog horn or maybe someone leaning on their car's horn in traffic.  There is a tambourine that keeps the time throughout the entire song, it is steady and in the groove.  Every instrument is in the pocket and hitting hard.  The bass is as heavy as the fog horn sound and the drums are heavy as the bass.  The only instrument that takes a subtle approach is the guitar.  You find yourself uncontrollably caught up in a mid-tempo shoulder bob and then  suddenly you are thrown against the wall when the horns burst in.  There is a brief break and the Mickey Tucker takes a solo on the organ.  This instrumental is as cool as it gets and I could play this endlessly and never get bored.

Slim Willis Band - "I Sayed That" b/w "Wine Me Up Baby"  (Reginald Records cat. (none)
Another great bass and drum intro begins "I Sayed That," with a sax that seems to be taunting them both. In the background there is a harmonica that sounds like it is laughing at the unfolding confrontation.  Mid-tempo and almost lumbering, the groove is not a studied one but make no mistake this thing has got one hell of a deep groove.  The organ is in and out of the mix almost observing the goings but to only offer some  advice or an  opinion.  Maybe the organ is reminding them not to loose the groove and keep their shit together.  These guys have let go and are just doing it, letting their instruments speak for them.  Maybe that explains the title.  On playback someone remarked after hearing their performance, "NO WAY, I SAYED THAT!"

La Bert Ellis - "Batman Theme"  (A&M Records cat. 789 (Promotional Copy / Not For Sale))
I have a lot of Batman Records.  None of them sound similar.  The Batman music genre is still a curious one to me.  Why did this one song, the theme of a tongue-in-cheek take on the Batman comic book series spawn so many truly amazing versions as well as entire LPs exploding with mind-blowing music.  I still need many Batman related records and each of those are just as unique as the ones I already own.  Some music is truly "inspired" by the batman series or others capitalizing on the success of the series but even those are exploitation of the highest order.  The funny thing is there couldn't have been tremendous profits in putting out a Batman related record unless you were actually authorized to do so.  If it wasn't authorized you would have had to pay for the right to use the theme and every one of these LPs includes the Batman logo (or a variation of) somewhere on the sleeve.  There are Garage Rock versions, Jazz versions, Rock versions, R&B and Soul versions and ones that are Funky but not necessarily Funk.  I had heard this particular version by La Bert Ellis a few times before tracking a copy down.  All the copies I know of are promotional copies which leads me to believe there may not have ever been an official release.  There is something different about this version than all the other organ based versions.  It opens with the sound of thew Batmobile like many other versions and the music begins almost in a corny fashion with some Moog or Synth effects peppering the mix but when the organ takes over things get serious.  The horns jump in line like some of the best Latin jams and about half way through the organ kicks it up a notch and the whole thing comes to a boil.  After this point there is no stopping it, I can only imagine that the full take of this version is around ten or fifteen minutes.  If I did a version of the theme I would be so torn.  I have no one favorite, each idea, arrangement and genre or style is completely valid and compliments the song perfectly.  Some of the modern takes are far less desirable but unfortunately that seems to be true of a lot of modern music (modern being anything after 1984 or so).  I'm sorry what is the purpose of auto-tuning?  I never tire of versions of the Batman theme and all the other related music and this is a prime example why.

Hello Y'all,
This week is not a theme but a genre night. Chuck Thalmus Rasulala Daily aka - DJ Chuck Deez-Nutz and myself will be loading up the record bags with all things Hip Hop. Many years ago I sold off a lot of 12-inches and a good amount of LP's but I kept what I really loved. Of course there are some records I wish I didn't get rid of and others I wish I would have picked up along the way but regardless of what I do and don't regret about my collection, Hop-Hop has always been a major part of my listening pleasure. I was never a fan of Disco and have since heard some pretty amazing cuts that are considered Disco but honestly the mid to late 70's killed R&B, Soul and Funk. All the greats tried their hand at Disco but most of the results fell sadly short of their collective talents. Soon DJ culture flourished and Hip Hop was born. Who exactly did what when is not really the important part, what is important is the passion and creativity that drives Hip Hop. Equally musically and Socially aware DJs, MCs, dancers and fans helped create a genre as well as a culture. Whenever art and music collide with the disenfranchised, disrespected and the fringe you usually get something great. Hip Hop and Hardcore started at a similar time period and for similar reasons and I was immediately drawn to both. When it seems the government has no intention on representing you and your kind and there appears to be no future what is else do you do when not complaining… you create.

That's right kids, DJ Chuck Deez-Nutz and Fat Pat The Water Rat aka Primitive Sound System take on Hip Hop all night long...all night. Making selections from the 70's to the 00's and every one a HIT RECORD. NO DISCO + NO PUNK and definitely no JUNK! Schooly D, PE, Cannibal Ox, ODB, Pharcyde, EPMD, Biz Markie, Tribe, Wu, etc, etc will ALL be there.
