Primitive Sound System at D.C.'s Tavern Thurs. August 2nd from 9PM to Closing

Hello Y'all,
So we arrived back on the shores of the Jersey Turnpike Sunday afternoon.  The car and its passengers were equally tired and just as happy to be home.  This trip was based around the search for fun and records.  Sadly that means I may have had more fun than the nine year old but I don't think he even noticed.  Our first stop was Philadelphia.  One thing we noticed immediately about Philly was that it is old.  Not scary old but movie set old.  It was especially funny to see a plaque bolted to a building describing a historical location or event but upon closer inspection you may notice a Flyers or Eagles banner in the window.  "Do you know who slept there?!"  "Um, yeah… me."  Time rolls on no matter what we do or no matter who we are. Sadly this also described the records stuffed in the bins around the city, time worn.  Unlike the buildings most of the records had seen better days and others needed to be just tossed or recycled.  You would think Philly was an island and there is a finite number of records on it.  Each record had that rode hard and put away wet look. There were a few bright moments digging and definitely some good stores but I guess I expected so much more from Philly.

Our next stop was Hershey Park which was only about fun and not records.  See, I can have fun without records being involved.  We dipped ourselves in chocolate, road on some of the best toys a kid could ever have and sweat our asses off.  I did get to ride the Coal Cracker which was a childhood favorite, Hank seemed to really AHHHHHHHH!!!!… like it too. …off to Pittsburgh… I mean Kidsburgh.

I had been told by everyone that NOTHING could prepare you for what lay behind the doors of Jerry's Records.  I have been through Pittsburgh and I believe I had been there a few times as a child.  Every year there is a very big 45 & 78 record show in Pittsburgh - I have never been to it.  As you look to the top of the steps while walking up to Jerry's you can see there are records everywhere.    When I say records everywhere I mean every-where… on shelves, behind shelves, in boxes, in bins, in the walkways and even in the bathroom.  I wandered around for a few minutes and then I saw the fourteen foot high shelves containing box after box after box of 7-inches.  I spent almost seven hours flipping through as many 45s  as I could and didn't come close to putting a dent in even one wall.  I am not saying I'd like to live in Pittsburgh but I could crash at Jerry's for a month or two.  By-the-way did I mention that Jerry's son Willie has an entire store of 78's?  He does and it is equally impressive.  On our way out of town we stopped at a small shop above a cafe called Mind Cure.  The owner of Mind Cure was young but from his impressive selection you can tell he has taste far beyond his years.

Our next stop, York PA, is just outside Dallastown PA where the one and only Bazooka Joe resides with his lovely wife and hyper-active dog Olive.  It's not like we needed extra coaxing to stop and say hi but a dozen crabs didn't hurt.  Joe had told us about the incredible Tom's Music Trade so we hit it before making our way to their home.  No one in the York area should ever complain about not being able to find records because Tom's is one of the best shops I have ever seen and apparently he is stocking the bins daily.

We found fun and I found a whole lot of records.  Come by D.C.'s Tavern tonight and hear a good number of what I found plus, Garage Rock, R&B, Soul / Funk, Punk and some Metal even.

See you there!

- pat.

Dust & Grooves Kickstarter Project

Hello Y'all,

About four years ago fellow record collector and photographer Eilon Paz came to the mansion on the hill and photographed my record collection.  In the process he snapped a few shots of my hideous form and some amazing ones of Hank.  Hank was just five at the time and still completely fascinated by vinyl records.  Though his fascination has moved more towards Physics and video games he loves music and plays records whenever he needs downtime from his digital existence. Since then, Eilon has travelled the globe documenting some of the greatest collections and characters of the vinyl world.  Some of his subjects are famous and others are just the person next door with all those records but every one of them share the same passion for music on vinyl.
As the world becomes more portable and easily converted to ones and zeroes it is extremely impressive that vinyl remains such an important format.  CDs were doomed from the start, left at the doorstep of an un-expectant public before the men behind the technology said the format had come to full term.  MP3's dumb down the sound and cut the highs and lowsso much that many songs aren't even recognizable as the version you are familiar with.  Ain't no dynamic range in that digital realm and turning up the volume doesn't help.  Speaking of volume, I have yet to meet anyone who plays the 10,000 songs currently on their iPod / iPhone or iThing.  All those songs may be nice to have in your pocket and maybe it impresses your friends but to really appreciate music you need to sit with it and absorb each 7-inch, 78, or album in its entirety.  Yes, there is a time and a place to just have music on in the background or jump from song to song but the gluttony that is digital music is as unhealthy as over eating or binge drinking.  Would you uncork a fine bottle of wine and chug it down in one big gulp just to move on to the next bottle?  I beg of you… don't do it.

In 2012 the vinyl record remains a perfect format.  Some people love to declare it dead but just like painting it has not gone away.  Eilon has spent the past four years definitively proving that vinyl not only lives but still rules.  To see his project fully realized Mr. Paz will embark on a tour of the US documenting many more collections and the fascinating people behind them.  To help fund this trip and subsequently publish a beautifully designed book he has started a Kickstarter project - http://tinyurl.com/Dust-and-Grooves  The book is not just a coffee table accessory.  I imagine this tome will eventually be used as a text book for future generations studying the culture of the past.  Or considering the enduring quality of the format thus far they will be flipping through its pages while spinning some records.  Whether you give a dollar or give a thousand you will have a direct hand in creating a great piece of art.  Maybe you want to support your favorite speed by donating 16, 45, 33 or 78 dollars or, if size matters, how about 5, 7, 10, or 12 dollars.  Be creative but all we ask is that you give what you can.

VINYL RULES!
(Oh yeah, the designer behind that famous Vinyl Rules sticker will also be documented along with his collection)

Primitive Sound System and Chuck Daly at D.C.'s Tavern Thursday June 7th from 9PM to Closing

Hello Y'all,

This month Chuck and I pogo our way to the pit and drag everyone down with us. I am going to keep mostly to the 70's and early Hardcore… because I am that old. The desire to do an all Punk night came after buying the new LP by OFF! (offofficial.com) - which if you haven't heard it you should if you have heard it you know why I have become possessed with the desire to only spin records from the left side of my studio. That's where I keep the Punk ROCK!!! I have only pulled a 100% Punk set once before and it is easily my favorite night of music.

BUT!
Then I was upstate and came across a copy of The Nothing 45 "Uniformz" for a dollar. A DOLLAR! As far as I knew this was one of the rarer Punk 7-inches and was worth somewhere in the $500 range. I knew this from working behind the counter of Finyl Vinyl where I saw the record listed on countless want-lists. These lists are always presented by the exact same type of person in every genre of music. They would hand you the list and then almost immediately say, "Do you know any of these?" OK you smug bastard, NO, I don't know them all. Actually no one probably does. OK, and… then they'd usually give you a few seconds and say…"Do you have any of them?" Of course we do! How many copies of each would you like? Fuck off asshole! So there I was in a junk shop upstate and the first record I spot is The Nothing. I almost immediately slide it under another record and continue to look around for about an hour. I actually unearthed a bunch of nice finds. This was easily one of the most disorganized shops I had ever been in. Basements in abandoned buildings are more organized. I talked with the guy running the shop the entire time I was looking. By-the-way, people aren't more friendly the further you get from the City they just talk more. I began going through my finds checking condition and deciding what I was going to keep. I really do try not to be a record shark because almost all of them are assholes so I listened to each record with "Hoss" giving him the opportunity to recognize it or know it wasn't a dollar record. He didn't. I drove back to our friend's place and did a little research. Much to my surprise it turned out that the record was far more rare than I knew. The past few copies that have sold on eBay have gone for around $2000. Yes three zeros, not two. I then shot an email to my buddy behind the rare Punk site CollectorScum.com he not only confirmed the value but he was recently involved in a reissue of the 45.

I posted the fact that I found a copy on a few sites including facebook and much to my surprise a friend's band used to play with The Nothing and unfortunately had an amp stolen by them. YEAH! PUNK ROCK!!!

I didn't find a lot of info about the band so I then reached out to Howie Pyro. As always I didn't just get a story… I got a great one.

Here is what he had to say…

"Long story to type… Singer came outta nowhere, had an English accent but everyone was sure he was from New Jersey or Cleveland or something. I played with the guitar player (Angel Electra) for a minute and they're both in this video with me and The Misfits from "78 or "79 (earliest footage of them). I'm on vocals with Trixie Sly (Singer of The Nothing) ruining it by singing in the wrong timing. Danzig on guitar, Jerry Only on bass, etc...always a story…"

A quick Google search and I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4J_nxDnZHY - "Peppermint Twist" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog"

Record Store Dazed

I am not sure how many years Record Store Day has been a yearly event but it didn't take long for it to begin feeding on itself. I like rare records, limited editions and local releases as much as the next record buyer, archivist, DJ etc but when you call your event Record Store Day and send out nothing but limited edition releases you are pretty much guaranteeing that the patrons to your store will be in and out like a flash or puff of smoke. I witnessed it first hand this year in Holdfast a great record store / vintage clothing shop in Asbury Park. I am sure they had a great day but the majority of the Record Store Day revellers came and went like the wind with ONLY Record Store Day limited edition releases tucked under their arms. From the looks of them about 1/3 of them were going to keep those releases and enjoy them for many years to come. The majority of them were already deciding which to eBay first. If Record Store Day is to be a thing. It needs to concentrate on making it a release date (other than the usual Tuesday release date) and get the records into the hands of all who want it and not at inflated eBay prices. The owner of Holdfast told us about the rules to selling Record Store Day releases yet more than a week prior I saw items listed on eBay. For myself the one true shining moment of this years Record Store Day was the Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band A&M double 7-inch "re-issue" from Sundazed. Thank you Bob Irwin and crew from reminding me that a re-issue can be as exciting as an original.

Primitive Sound System, Chuck Daly and Bronco Billy Dolan at D.C.'s Tavern Thursday February 2nd from 9PM to Closing

Hello Y'all,
Ground Hog Day is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the fact that it, out of all the holidays on the calendar, truly celebrates nothing.  There are no scientific findings around Phil's abilities. He pokes his head out of his hole and then sticks it back in.  No matter what he does someone interprets it as either a short or long Winter and … Yeah… holiday over.  Considering there seems to be  an endless supply of Phils it is just as creepy as all the other holidays based on mythical characters.  This year we are going to celebrate in style, "Six More Weeks of Soul!"  OK, so it is just five hours, but it sounds better with six weeks.  It's been a while since we have done a Soul night and I am really looking forward to it.  As always be kind and rewind, tip your bartenders and above all if you drink don't drive and if you drive keep off the sidewalks.  See ya there!

/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/

I am bringing WAY too many records.  Some classics and some that hopefully you may not know.

Here are some Soulful 45's casting a shadow on the tables…

BT And TB - "Queen of The Ghetto"  (Philadelphia International Records cat. ZS8 3571)
I have said it all too often but I love instrumental music.  I will usually take an instrumental over a vocal track any day.  I am sad that bands don't put an instrumental track on their records or on the b-side as often as they used to.  It was really common.  Here Bobby Taylor and Thom Bell take performer credits as well as arranger and producer credits.  Is there nothing these guys can't do.  When I first picked this 7-inch up I noticed the date, 1975 and the title, "I Can't Quit Your Love" and thought this is not only the wrong date but that title says bad late 70's Soul ballad.  Nope, not even close, it was an instrumental with a clavinet running through it as the lead or voice.  The song wasn't bad and for some reason I immediately thought how incredible it would have been if  Yaphet Kotto would have played Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files.  No offense to James Garner but it would have been pretty cool.  Ever the optimist I flipped it over and was very pleasantly surprised.  This was far closer to what I was looking for and there was still that Action movie soundtrack vibe I love.    I wonder if this was ever used in a movie?  It should be.  It opens up with really big sound, lots of horns and a wah guitar jumps out accenting the beat with some really nicely recorded drums.  The song pulls back on the big sound and trims it back to the essentials, bass, drums, keys, and guitar.  The horns slowly build back up before repeating the theme which is what really gives it that sound track feel.  This is a movie I want to see.  Eddie Harris was right, "Theme In Search of a Movie" indeed.  I am not sure who the "Queen of The Ghetto" is or what her story was but I am glad i got to know her for at least  three minutes.

The Ice Man's Band - "Come Together" and "Ain't Understanding Mellow" b/w "It's Down To That" and "People Make The World Go Round (That's What Makes The World Go Round)"   (Mercury cat. MEPL-22 (Promotional Copy / Not For Sale))
One of the first "records" I ever owned was actually a cassette.  When I say, "I owned" it is because my Dad has a great record collection and we spent most of our time going through it and studying them.  My son doesn't seem to share this same curiosity as he told me recently, "Why do you tell me about the people playing the music.  I either like it or I don't, all that other stuff is boring."  He definitely has a point.  If you aren't interested in the details it just gets in the way of listening.  I guess he will never read these emails because here I get to talk too much about the records I love.  Where was I?  Oh yeah, The Stylistics.  The Best of The Stylistics to be exact and yes I still have the cassette.  The Stylistics made a very deep impression on me, one that remains to this day.  The song that immediately stood out for me was  "People Make The World Go Round…"  I knew right from the opening that this wasn't your typical ballad.  The open chimes and bass line are peaceful but have an obvious sadness.  The opening lyrics let you know right away that there may be something wrong in your neighborhood, "Trashmen didn't get my trash today."  This is no "Betcha By Golly Wow."  The next line is even more poignant, "Buses on strike want a raise in fare; So they can help pollute the air."  Holy shit!  The thing that should keep cars off the road, hopefully gives us all more "breathing room" in our cities, helps us to get to work on time, and saves us money is also a major contributor to pollution.  Yikes, WE ARE ALL DOOMED!  They then turn their sights on Wall Street.  Wall Street blames the long hairs for them loosing money and then they turn around put up their feet and smoke a fat cigar without a care in the world.  Tomorrow they'll find someone else to blame while they get richer and richer.  Sound familiar?  Nothing changes.  But people do change and that is what the song is about.  Go underground get out of the line of fire and make changes to the way things are done and how people act.  People make the world go round and are responsible for changing the world.  Quite a task to say the least.  Over the years I have collected several versions of this song.  I have rarely found a bad version.  When I dropped the needle on the "Introducing The Ice Man's Band" LP I got chills.  These guys captured the very essence of what makes the song so great.  The environment it creates is one of being uncomfortably close, not like a hug but more like the feeling you get in a crowded elevator.  Everyone avoiding touching one another and for the most part silent.

Mickey and the Soul Generation - "Iron Leg"  (Maxwell cat. L-803)
How the hell have I never written about this record before?!  This was one of the first "Funk Instrumentals" I ever owned by an artist I had never heard of.  "Iron Leg" is basically a Jazz / Funk Instrumental and heavy as hell.  The opening of "Iron leg" sounds like a fog horn or maybe someone leaning on their car's horn in traffic.  There is a tambourine that keeps the time throughout the entire song, it is steady and in the groove.  Every instrument is in the pocket and hitting hard.  The bass is as heavy as the fog horn sound and the drums are heavy as the bass.  The only instrument that takes a subtle approach is the guitar.  You find yourself uncontrollably caught up in a mid-tempo shoulder bob and then  suddenly you are thrown against the wall when the horns burst in.  There is a brief break and the Mickey Tucker takes a solo on the organ.  This instrumental is as cool as it gets and I could play this endlessly and never get bored.

Slim Willis Band - "I Sayed That" b/w "Wine Me Up Baby"  (Reginald Records cat. (none)
Another great bass and drum intro begins "I Sayed That," with a sax that seems to be taunting them both. In the background there is a harmonica that sounds like it is laughing at the unfolding confrontation.  Mid-tempo and almost lumbering, the groove is not a studied one but make no mistake this thing has got one hell of a deep groove.  The organ is in and out of the mix almost observing the goings but to only offer some  advice or an  opinion.  Maybe the organ is reminding them not to loose the groove and keep their shit together.  These guys have let go and are just doing it, letting their instruments speak for them.  Maybe that explains the title.  On playback someone remarked after hearing their performance, "NO WAY, I SAYED THAT!"

La Bert Ellis - "Batman Theme"  (A&M Records cat. 789 (Promotional Copy / Not For Sale))
I have a lot of Batman Records.  None of them sound similar.  The Batman music genre is still a curious one to me.  Why did this one song, the theme of a tongue-in-cheek take on the Batman comic book series spawn so many truly amazing versions as well as entire LPs exploding with mind-blowing music.  I still need many Batman related records and each of those are just as unique as the ones I already own.  Some music is truly "inspired" by the batman series or others capitalizing on the success of the series but even those are exploitation of the highest order.  The funny thing is there couldn't have been tremendous profits in putting out a Batman related record unless you were actually authorized to do so.  If it wasn't authorized you would have had to pay for the right to use the theme and every one of these LPs includes the Batman logo (or a variation of) somewhere on the sleeve.  There are Garage Rock versions, Jazz versions, Rock versions, R&B and Soul versions and ones that are Funky but not necessarily Funk.  I had heard this particular version by La Bert Ellis a few times before tracking a copy down.  All the copies I know of are promotional copies which leads me to believe there may not have ever been an official release.  There is something different about this version than all the other organ based versions.  It opens with the sound of thew Batmobile like many other versions and the music begins almost in a corny fashion with some Moog or Synth effects peppering the mix but when the organ takes over things get serious.  The horns jump in line like some of the best Latin jams and about half way through the organ kicks it up a notch and the whole thing comes to a boil.  After this point there is no stopping it, I can only imagine that the full take of this version is around ten or fifteen minutes.  If I did a version of the theme I would be so torn.  I have no one favorite, each idea, arrangement and genre or style is completely valid and compliments the song perfectly.  Some of the modern takes are far less desirable but unfortunately that seems to be true of a lot of modern music (modern being anything after 1984 or so).  I'm sorry what is the purpose of auto-tuning?  I never tire of versions of the Batman theme and all the other related music and this is a prime example why.

Primitive Sound System on This Is The Modern World with Trouble

Hello Y'all,
On Tuesday October 11th from 10AM to High Noon I get to spin a set of Soulful & Funky ladies on the always great, This Is The Modern World with Trouble. Trouble and I have talked about doing this for a while and have been trading YouTube clips of some of the better performances since. I don't think there is a record in the box older than the early 90's and one record I received just last Wednesday. So this really is the modern world. The vocal styles of the New Funk and Soul scene can vary greatly and so can the quality. The men seem to fail at a far higher rate than the ladies. The voices of James Brown, Bobby Byrd, Dyke, Curtis Mayfield, Syl Johnson, Eddie Bo, Lee Dorsey and countless others from the 50's through the 70's had a quality all their own and still don't sound dated even today. Too often when a young man steps to the mic now, the results are forced, thin sounding and sometimes just plain corny. The guys seem focused on the past and try way too hard to be "real." The ladies on the other hand just get "it." You know "it" when you hear "it" and you definitely know how "it" feels… "IT" feels right. Some ladies sing, some shout and others give it everything they've got as if they'll never get another chance to sing again. Luckily these ladies have very impressive discographies documenting their amazing performances but that also made selections for these two hours difficult. I started buying up New Funk & Soul records in the early nineties as one of the local NYC Funk and Soul re-issue labels began releasing their own 7-inches. Most of those early releases were instrumentals but slowly vocals began popping up here and there. Soon I began to find other labels doing similar releases. The sound was different from the Acid Jazz scene and was definitely not concerned with slick recording quality. Despite being disappointed with many of the male vocals I tried not to make too many comparisons to the originals. Instead I focused on the instrumentals and the wonderful female vocal recordings that seemed to be available in endless supply. I'm not naming any of the records I am bring to the station tomorrow because than why would you listen. Tune in for a bunch of ladies that have brought much pleasure to my ears.

FMU is also in the middle of a fund raising marathon of sorts called, "Shock & Awetober." You can make a pledge to the station - https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php or directly to Trouble's show at http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/LM. While you are there listen to all her incredible archived shows.

See Ya!

Primitive Sound System and Chuck Daly at D.C.'s Tavern Thurs September 1st from 10PM to Closing

Hello Y'all,
This week is not a theme but a genre night. Chuck Thalmus Rasulala Daily aka - DJ Chuck Deez-Nutz and myself will be loading up the record bags with all things Hip Hop. Many years ago I sold off a lot of 12-inches and a good amount of LP's but I kept what I really loved. Of course there are some records I wish I didn't get rid of and others I wish I would have picked up along the way but regardless of what I do and don't regret about my collection, Hop-Hop has always been a major part of my listening pleasure. I was never a fan of Disco and have since heard some pretty amazing cuts that are considered Disco but honestly the mid to late 70's killed R&B, Soul and Funk. All the greats tried their hand at Disco but most of the results fell sadly short of their collective talents. Soon DJ culture flourished and Hip Hop was born. Who exactly did what when is not really the important part, what is important is the passion and creativity that drives Hip Hop. Equally musically and Socially aware DJs, MCs, dancers and fans helped create a genre as well as a culture. Whenever art and music collide with the disenfranchised, disrespected and the fringe you usually get something great. Hip Hop and Hardcore started at a similar time period and for similar reasons and I was immediately drawn to both. When it seems the government has no intention on representing you and your kind and there appears to be no future what is else do you do when not complaining… you create.

That's right kids, DJ Chuck Deez-Nutz and Fat Pat The Water Rat aka Primitive Sound System take on Hip Hop all night long...all night. Making selections from the 70's to the 00's and every one a HIT RECORD. NO DISCO + NO PUNK and definitely no JUNK! Schooly D, PE, Cannibal Ox, ODB, Pharcyde, EPMD, Biz Markie, Tribe, Wu, etc, etc will ALL be there.

Slide into Back - in - Back for the Beers and Beats. MC Larry The Hunter will set 'em up so you can put 'em down.

ROCK N' ROLL NEVER HIP HOPPED LIKE THIS!

See Ya!
- pat.

Chuck Daly, Bronco Billy Dolan and Primitive Sound System at D.C.'s Tavern Thurs July 7th 9PM - 2AM

Hello Y'all,
What has three heads, screams so loud your ears will bleed and can raze a small town in seconds? No, we aint talkin' 'bout no King Ghidorah. It's the First Thursday of Every Month Trio, those vinyl toting spazzes, The Once a Day Vinyl Supplement - CHUD Daly, the one-man three legged race known as "Bronco" Billy Dolan and a half man; half cinder block hybrid known as Primitive Sound System. If all three were to spin their sets at the exact same time it would be like hearing the voices of angels shat out the ass of a grizzly bear. A sound so pure it would kill you instantly. Fear not, you get to enjoy every note, every sound, every dirty groove in three equally timed segments which as far as we know can only cause minor injuries. Of course the whole experience is heightened when looking through the bottom of mason jar filled with beer. But then again what isn't, except maybe driving. Remember kids, if you are drinking don't drive, and if you are walking… make up for the folks driving. Larry The Hunter is pouring those drinks so tip him like you mean it because he can smell fear a mile away.

I recently paid a visit to my favorite record store in NYC, Big City Records. For about nine years I have been trading a single title with the owners. A record that I became the sole source of. That record, "F Minor Disco," is by Ross Carnegie, Ross used a box and a half of the title as payment for a website I designed and built for him. I also helped him with his marketing and promotions of his live performances (which I unfortunately never attended). I met Ross while researching tracks and publishing rights for a compilation entitled, "Vital Organs Vol. One" which Ross proudly graced its cover. Not only is his track, "Cool Dad," one of my favorites on the LP but he really is one of the coolest people I have ever met. The photo that became the cover was only one of hundreds he had in an amazing archive of photos and memorabilia stored in a crawl space in his Harlem home that doubled as a meeting place. When he first gave me the records no one was interested in it. That was also what he was told when the record was originally released. Sometime in 2001 I was getting asked for copies. Apparently the people I had given copies to were far more influential than I could have ever imagined. I never counted the exact number of records in the box but there had to be about 200 copies. Well, now they are all gone. That box was one of the greatest payments anyone has ever given me for my services. Below is the final list of records I traded with the store:

Soul Searchers - "It's All In Your Mind" b/w "Soul To The People" (Sussex cat. SUX 244)

Beaufort Express - "You Got To Do Your Best" b/w "Here I Come" (Priscilla cat. SPR 1001)

Primitive Sound System and SANATON! all weekend Long...

Hello Y'all,
WOW, what a f@#! week I have! On Friday, June 24th from 10PM - 11:30PM I get to spin some Summertime goodness at the Bikini Beach Blowout! Of course I didn't take this gig because I get to play records. Any chance I get to put on a bikini… I AM THERE! Expect an hour and a half of some of my favorite records. After that tsunami I will need to get home and rest up for the Jersey City Record Riot! Yes, another event that must be shouted like Vavoom! I love the Jersey City Record Riot! I always come away with some really cool records and get to hang out with and meet like minded individuals with a serious addiction. Feed that habit. Life is too short to listen to shitty music so know what you like and find it on the ONLY format that maters…vinyl. The Record Riot! is Saturday, June 25th; doors open at 9AM for $20 and admission is FREE after 11AM. THEN, back home to rest up for a SANATON! show where we get to open for one of my favorite bands of the 90's, the Archers of Loaf. Pavement may own this genre but where they went from Progressive to Pop the Archers slowly worked their way from awesome aggressive Punk band to Progressive Pop geniuses. There is no wonder they were not everyone's cup of tea… they were genuinely great and bursting with creativity. Mark and I couldn't be more excited about this show.

this is a flow-arts friendly, No Parking on the Dancefloor event...grab yer hoops/poi/staff/etc and get DOWN.

bring yer best bathing suit and check your pants at our CLOTHES check.

As much as I like electronic muzak, and hula-hooping, one thing I was missing at some burner type events etc was being able to jam out to 60s and 70s fuzzed out 45s. And considering the hula hoops origins go back to the late 50s/60s, it just makes sense. So me and my homegrrl B.A. aka BAMiAM.tv came up with this little shindig. Come escape to the 'beach' with us, right in the middle of hipsterburg! We welcome flow artists of all walks of life, hoop/poi/staff/etc, and of course if you just have your dancing feet that's all you need! And if you feel like stripping down, we'll watch your pants for you ;)

BAMiAM.tv will be mixing beach inspired visuals all night so you don't have to take the train to far rockaway.

As for the DJs, Young Chris and BoogieMan have been diggin' and droppin' heat for more then a wee minute in NYC, and were residents at the legendary Lost and Found party (RIP--my favorite Tuesday shindig for many years). They have crazy shit. Also on deck is Primitive Sound System aka Pat Longo, another reeediculous collector, DJ, and drummer. Come early to catch his ace sides before he heads back to the wife and kid. Of course between spinning I'll be spinning and then I'll be...spinning.

Should be very estupido. I expect my ninja ppls to be there, you know who you are!

Primitive Sound System at D.C.'s Tavern Thursday June 2nd from 10:30PM to Closing

Hello Y'all,

"My name is Pat, and I'm a vinyl junky."

I know this to be true. I also know that there are a lot worse things to be addicted to. While driving recently we passed a house obviously occupied by a hoarder. In contrast my records are organized, individually bagged and stored on shelving and in boxes. There are no dead cats or any animals in, on or around the records. I love, play and share every record I own. I have never purchased a record to keep it hermetically sealed in a case so no one can ever hear it again. I recently acquired a record that was in my top five wants for almost 20 years. The 7-inch of "Mama Soul" by Harold Alexander. I will play it tonight. It will only be the second or third time I have ever played it.

The Hi-Fidelity Prayer

OMFG, grant me the Serenity to acquire
the records I cannot seem to uncover.
Courage to appreciate the records I own,
and wisdom to know the difference (between an original and a reissue).

Listening one day at a time;
Enjoying one side at a time.
Accepting dead wax as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Columbia Records did,
this sinful fragility of 78's as it is,
not satisfied and improved upon it.
Trusting that we will make all right selections,
and surrender to our musical tastes and mis-cues,
so that we may be reasonably happy in this life,
and supremely happy with all DJs mixes,
forever and the next.

Amen Brother!

Sadly this past weekend Gil Scott-Heron left us. There is not much I can say about Gil Scott-Heron that has not already been said. I have loved his music and words for as long as I can remember. I especially remember hearing "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," and "The Bottle" long before I committed it to memory who the artist was. Because of the "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" I always knew I never wanted a case of the nubs. I always think of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" in the same world as "Compared To What," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," and "My Generation." Brilliant songs that force us to look around us as well as at ourselves but ultimately are music and entertainment. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Syl Johnson - Mythological 45s (Numero Group cat. NUM-ESBOX003)
I recently mentioned to a friend that I bought the Syl Johnson "Complete Mythology" box set. His quick and only reply was, "Isn't that way more Syl Johnson than anyone will ever need?" I explained that I already have the Twinight / Twilight LPs as reissues and all the original 7-inches, all the original Hi LP release (except one) and a couple of the 7-inches, a few odds and ends 7-inches and even the Collectables Records Greatest hits CD… and I STILL couldn't wait to get a copy of the box set. So, NO! My answer is, there can NEVER be too much Syl Johnson. Luckily the good folks at Numero Group think the same way I do (or they just want my money) because they recently released a companion 45 box set called "Mytholoical 45s." Basically this is a Greatest Hits on 45 of the Complete Mythology box. The tracks are well chosen and really show off the vast number of Soulful styles Mr. Johnson claimed as his own. Whether it be R&B, Soul or Funk, Syl Johnson is always the best there is. Myth confirmed!

Harold Alexander - "Mama Soul" b/w "Sunshine Man" (Flying Dutchman cat. FD 26016 (Promotional Copy / Not For Sale))
WOW! I have been looking for a copy of this since 1994. This is one off my top five wants. A true Holy Grail record for me if there ever was. I don't even recall ever hearing the 7-inch version. I just knew it existed. I became obsessed with Harold "Jazzbo" Alexander from his side work with Big John Patton. I loved the Patton LPs "Understanding" and "Accent On The Blues." There was a sound to those LPs like no other. That sound was made that much greater on "Understanding" by the incredible and explosive flute work of Harold Alexander. In the 90's Blue Note began one of their best and most extensive reissue series to date. One of the "unreleased" sessions they put out was "Boogaloo" by John Patton (as well as "Memphis To New York Spirit"). "Boogaloo" featured Harold Alexander and was the perfect compliment for the "Understanding" LP. I tracked down stone mint copies of Alexander's LPs as a leader on Flying Dutchman "Sunshine Man" and the live "Are you Ready?" Side one of "Sunshine Man" was everything I could have hoped for and my obsession not only was warranted but it grew. BUT, when I dropped the needle on the opening cut of side two I was floored. That cut was "Mama Soul." For the next 5:50 I was captivated. This is one of the finest, raw, sweat drenched Soul / Jazz FUNK tunes you will ever hear. Alexander doesn't just make his flute talk or even talk while playing flute; he screams, and wails. The band POUNDS the hell out of their instruments but you should expect nothing less from Neal Creque, Richard Landrum, Richard Davis and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. I picture Alexander's performance being similar to David Yow or Iggy Pop at their best but without the nudity. I picture "Jazzbo" contorting and flailing himself about the stage, screaming into and at the flute in a love / hate relationship. When people say they are giving 110% you want to say, fuck you idiot, this is what 100% looks like and there is NO WAY you can do more than that.

PSS, Chuck Daly, and Street Justice at DC's Tavern Thurs may 5th 9PM - Closing + Bob Piersanti opening Friday May 6th

Hello Y'all,
So May is upon us and the fucking birds are eating all my grass seed. I guess they have to eat too though I wish they would just eat the skunks. Now that would be a perfect circle. Screw nature we are all about the petroleum products, vinyl records baby! I have two days in a row of full on tour de farce spinnin' coming up. First up is Thursday night at D.C.'s. Do you know what is so great about D.C's? EVERYTHING! Actually, let me tell you, I get to play anything I want and most of the people are really receptive (aside from a few pricks that don't know shit about music… you know who you are). Also, for the past few months we have been extremely lucky to be joined by the King of the Skin Scribblers, DJ Iron Fist himself, the one and only Chuck Daly. This week Bronco Billy Dolan is off giving pleasure to another lucky City so it looks like Mr. Daly and I will be dueling it out at the tables once again. I do my best to stand my ground but the Daly Dose of ROCK!!! is the thing legends are made of. This week I am really excited to jump into a box of new goodies as well as old favorites. Chuck and I will be switching the turntables to random and hoping for the best. Busting up this little boys club is none other the Street Justice herself, Steff Kautzmann. Neither Chuck or I have the balls to take on the devastatingly awesome power of Street Justice so she will get the first hour and thirty minutes to herself. Avert your eyes because you are not worthy.

The Hunter slings the booze and if you are lucky you can pass out on a stool and not crumpled up in the corner like you usually do. Have you no shame?

… see you there!

And...

Friday, May 6th from 7 - 11PM I'll be the background music for and art opening of the amazing Bob Piersanti at 58 Gallery in Jersey City. This is going to be an incredible night. Not only do you get to feast your eyes on Bob's incredible art but the night will feature two sets of Go-Go dancers at 8:15 and 9PM. I am basically spinning a "This Is Your Life" set filled with all our favorites. Expect a lot of 50's Instrumentals, Rock and R&B, 60's Garage, Instrumentals and some Classic Rock as well as some Punk, 80's and 90's Garage, a handful of Country and even some freaked out novelty records and of course a set of Las Vegas Grind and Go-Go for the ladies. A feast for the mind body and soul, it's all here in the Underground!

The Racket in The Boxes:

Chuck Danzy - "Git Down" b/w "Jay Walk" (Nu-Tone Records cat. 532)

When a woman's voice opens a record by slowly stretching out the words "Geeeeeeeet Doooooowwwwn" you know you are in for some goodness. And that is exactly what this sexy little slab of soul delivers. The band is in full on party mode combining just enough looseness with some really solid playing to never become silly or repetitive. There is something familiar about the groove yet I can't place it but that only keeps me coming back for more and more listens. Maybe it is the opening bass line, does it recall "The Hip" by The Sparkles? The bass and drums lay down a solid base even before our Intro-ess entices us to join her on the floor. Soon the party is hot and heavy with sax and guitar. Both are eager to take stabs at solo moments on top of a very tinny, Garage rock organ. This organ is no Hammond B but you can certainly here this little wonder choking to push air threw its nostrils. Too much to drink perhaps. Hand claps, repeated backing vocals of "Get Down" and a groove that won't quit. I suggest we get down as often as possible.

Dennis Coffey - "Ubiquitous" Original Version b/w Steinski Mix (Strut cat. STRUT 0755 (Record Store Day release))

This should be called "Legend 2." The mighty Detroit axeman is back with an amazing instrumental off his upcoming self titled release and two double de pleasure the single is backed by a completely tasty mix by none other than Steinski. Usually when a modern funk track is backed by a remix I wince. I wince hard. I almost passed up getting this release until I noticed that the remix was by Steinski. But then, ironically, the A side is what surprised me most. I have purchased new music by Steinski far more recently than that of Dennis Coffey so I feared an overproduced mess that would be saved by the B side at the hands of the talented Mr. Steinski. Happily, the "original" track hits hard and is perfectly arranged with all the familiar Dennis Coffey touches. Echoey guitar, organ, congas and break heavy drumming build, collide, come together and then build to a fervor like you wish New Funk and Soul bands would. It is such a pleasure when you hear a player you are most familiar with from music more than thirty years old and they still get "it." Coofey's guitar sounds amazing from start to finish and the fuzzed out finish is so exciting. Obviously this is not a solo guitar track and Mr. Coffey's band does an equally great job of keeping things pushed into the red when needed as well as laying down a simple bed for each players solo. Flip this over and I love the way Steinski brings us into the essence of the track. His added echo and stabbing repeated pieces give a feeling of a spiral. Not one that is out of control but one that is mesmerizing. He pulls pieces of the original track out and layers them onto a more mellow backing giving them a completely new life. As each sample is presented to us it is as if he is saying, "Did you hear that? That was really cool." The reworking and parts are respectful and on display to be admired, not scrutinized. Where Mr. Coffey's original is arranged somewhat traditionally with each instrument taking solos Steinski has a way of showing us everything at once but somehow allowing each sound and beat to ebb and flow quite harmoniously. The effected and mixed horn that just proceeds the end is reminiscent of the horn that was used as Harpo Marx's voice. This adds a brief but pleasant moment of humor in a way only Steinski can do. I am really happy I didn't pass the up.

Personal & The Pizzas - "Dead Meat" vs. "Joanie" (Total Punk cat. #1)
Personal & The Pizzas - "I Want You" b/w "Don't Trust No Party Boy" (Trouble In Mind cat. TIM 018)

I recently went to see Hoboken's own, Personal & The Pizzas' triumphant return to Maxwell's. On record these guys are the kings of pizza themed, lo-fi, retard rock. But live is a completely different experience. The 50 / 50 mix of Stooges and Ramones is still there but the playing is far more exact than the recordings. The set was maybe forty minutes long and was pure Punk attitude and volume. Each song ripped past but never lost any of the gooey Pizza goodness. Personal even commented on the fact that they were out songs, "…a lot quicker than you would think." The crowd sang along with every song pumping fists appropriately and you could tell The Pizzas were eating it up. I have seen a lot of shows at Maxwell's so to say this was one of my favorites is saying a lot. No, I mean it, it's a little more personal. Next time The Pizzas hit the stage at Maxwell's you better be there or I'll have to pop you in the mouth with my brass knuckles.

OFF! - "Compared To What" b/w "Rotten Apple" (Southern Lord cat. LORD128.5 (Red Vinyl))
OFF! - "Compared To What" b/w "Rotten Apple" (Southern Lord cat. LORD128.5 (Blue Vinyl tour 7"))
OFF! - "Live At Generation Records" - Poison City" "Now I'm Pissed" b/w "Crawl" "Rat Trap" (Vice / Generation Records cat. VCA 80025-7)
OFF! - First Four EP's (Vice cat. VCA 80021-7)

OFF! blow my mind. I imagine there are a lot of people who would pass this up since these guys are teetering on old age. Keith Morris is 55. Rather than that being a negative I think it is amazing that he sounds so fucking good. I would assume Steven McDonald is some where around 44 or 45. But I think this does the band a disservice to even bring it up. Moving on. There are a few songs that I will always be drawn to and "Compared to What" is one of them. When we named or very short lived label it was named after that brilliant Les McCann and Eddie Harris number. The songs lyrics are timeless, which you will rarely hear me say, and the groove is deep as hell. I have a lot of versions and one is funkier or more soulful than the next. I even have a version with another legendary Punk singer, Gary Floyd, fronting the amazing Soul Jazz band Mushroom. Floyd's voice is so incredible and works really well with the modern arrangement. When I heard there was a new version by OFF! I immediately sought it out. And once again OFF! does not disappoint. This version is blistering and almost unrecognizable as the same song. Weirdly there is almost a Stooges or possibly a Sex Pistols sound tucked in there as well. Morris spits the lyrics out with the same level of conviction Les McCann did over 30 years ago. Honestly I have so many versions of the song but I never really thought of it as a Punk tune. I couldn't be happier with this version and I am happy it is by a band I genuinely like. This has the same effect as other awesome Punk covers of songs that surprised the hell out of you that the band would even want to cover. The Angry Samoans doing "Time Has Come Today" immediately comes to mind. "TIME HAS COME, TIME HAS COME TODAY!" "TIME HAS COME, TIME HAS COME TODAY!" For you to listen to OFF!

Monophonics - "Like Yesterday b/w "Destruments - "Freedom" (Colemine cat. CLMN - 110)
New Funk is a very shaky thing. It seems each band comes out of the shoot amazing but soon plunges into the world of Neo-Soul boring bullshit. I have definitely slowed my purchases of New Funk because of this. I'll listen to samples of any one song sometimes twenty times before deciding to lay my money down. When I saw that the always satisfying Colemine Records had a new release I immediately searched for samples. When "Like Yesterday" started I wasn't sure what direction the song was going to take but, most of all I hoped it was an instrumental because most New Funk vocals are corny as shit. The vocals are especially shitty when they are trying to imitate the singers from the late 60's and early 70's. The intro comes in like the best David Ruffin tracks: slow, with a sense of mystery but all the while groovy as hell. Almost immediately the vocals come in and I couldn't have been happier. The vocalist is genuinely raw and he is not trying to sound like anyone but himself. Kudos to you and I hope you never change. I imagine he sounds older than he is but that is certainly a plus. The track is insanely professional with a big arrangement and beautifully smooth dynamics. Dare I say this sounds like something Curtis Mayfield might have done. There is a lot going on and yet it all comes together with the musicians playing as a unit and not individuals. If I may be so bold, there are enough fake Afro Beat Bands, leave the Neo-Soul to the D'Angelos of the world and please, oh please don't think just because you can play tighter / cleaner grooves and record them in better studios it will make your music sound better… because it won't. Keep doing what you are doing because it is awesome.

Destruments is an instrumental save for a few vocal snippets. The sound here starts to lean in the Afro Beat direction but doesn't ever embrace it fully. I love Afro Beat but it is just so overdone by every new band that took Jazz in High School. Instead Destruments create their own unique world of sound. I want this track to be played every time I enter a room. Who needs a weapon when you have dramatic sounds like these? This is music that will get people nervously looking over their shoulders as well as bobbing their heads. The song is full of guitar effects, vibes, killer steady drumming and a bass line that is so sparse when you go looking for it, you know you found it because it rattles your skull. The song you just heard was based on a true crime but the names were changed to protect the innocent. Freedom comes only to the ones that escape all others get 25 to life.

Batman - "Ein echter Batman ghet nicht unter!" "Eine Schwalbe macht noch keinen Sommer!" b/w "Cuccillone Classico!" "Hey Boy" (Bachelor / Red Lounge Records cat. BR - 47 b/w RLR087)

Our beloved Batman has returned to us but for this release he is flying solo. Sadly, Robin is no where to be found. Maybe the Boy Wonder is off at school or possibly locked up due to indecent public activities after going on one too many benders with the stewed crusader . Who knows. It would appear Batman is working slow crime nights as a Lounge Act. Documented here are two very peppy tunes all sung in German. Since I don't speak German it is possible Batman is singing about his own lascivious activities. Musically side one is Lounge scene, one-man-band featuring Casio or accordion style sounds with some female backing vocals. Batman seems happy enough or is he just heavily sedated? No one may ever know. On side two Batman wields his axe once more and there are even drums. Once again the lyrics are all in German but his time batman sounds a bit agitated. Maybe the sedatives are wearing off and he is confronted by his own madness as well as the fact that Robin has gone. Is what life after crime fighting is like? Relegated to a tiny stage in a no name bar singing songs about the bad lands? The last track is sung by the Amazing Angi. It appears she is the winner of some Gotham City "Idol" type talent show. I assume Batman was a guest judge on the panel and took a liking to the adorable Angi. Who knows where this will lead the fabled Dark Knight but let's hope he finds his way into the studio time and again to document his odyssey. Take care old friend and we hope to see you soon.
